Teaching Style:
For me, the key to learning the guitar is a thorough knowledge of the fingerboard. While the different styles of music are vast, the placement of notes, scales and chord shapes on the fingerboard remains the same. Once I get a student to understand and visualize the fingerboard, any music they desire to learn is at their fingertips.

As an Author:
Throughout my teaching career I searched for books to use with my students. I often found them to be confusing and tedious for the student, so I decided to put my teaching techniques into book form. I used simplicity and large diagrams in order to make the learning process as easy as is humanly possible. My books are entitled as the "Introduction To" series. Available title are:
  • An Introduction to Scales For The Guitarist An Introduction to Modes For The Guitarist An Introduction to Arpeggios For The Guitarist An Introduction to Chord Construction For The Guitarist
  • An Introduction to Musical Symbols For The Guitarist

Prices range from $10 to $25 and are available at ESM, or you can order directly from me by calling ESM, or email me at rollins@esom.org.

Student Recording Project:
I recently began a project for my students where they are to compose and record their own song. Each student was given the choice of grooves and keys to use. The format was the same for each song.I also gave them certain techniques to use for each section of the song. The tracks they could use was a drum track, bass guitar, rhythm guitar, secondary rhythm guitar, two lead guitar tracks and a guitar solo. Each student will get their own CD. The songs will soon be available in MP3 form so anyone can visit my page and listen to or download them.

How cool is it that a student can tell his or her friends to visit the ESM website and check out their CD!
